Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

This recipe will teach you to make the perfect potato wedges with your air fryer.

I always love making potatoes in my air fryer because they turn out crispy, nice, and fluffy inside.

Once you hack the perfect cooking temperature, you can quickly cook any potato inside the air fryer and get excellent results.

If you have NEVER cooked potato wedges in the air fryer, you should, as they are super easy, and it is tough to get them wrong.

Best Potatoes for Potato Wedges

Russet Potatoes are the best potatoes to make wedges. They turn out crisp on the outside and nice and soft on the inside.

I don’t get russet potatoes where I live, so I had to order them from another state this time for this post to test out this potato and compare it with the common yellow potato I get where I live.

Russet Potatoes

Russet potatoes are long(oval) and have dark brown skin, while yellow potatoes like a light color and are rounder in shape.

Yellow Potatoes

I will give you the cooking times for both of these potatoes, but I have used russet potatoes for this post and the images.

Should the type of potato stop you from eating wedges? I would say, regardless of the type of potato you have, give it a try in the air fryer.

I have tried all kinds of potatoes, and almost all of them, when cooked in the air fryer, taste AMAZING!

The temperature and time might differ; check out the table for that.

My family finishes all the potato recipes I make in the air fryer. So there is something in potatoes that make them taste delicious when cooked in the air fryer.

So, let’s slice the potatoes and make their wedges.

How to cut a potato into wedges?

You need to slice the potato into two halves along the length of the potato.

Then you cut them into quarters along the same axis as before. And cut each of the quarters into halves.

Whatever pieces you get in this step, ccut them again in the same way as shown in the picture into halves.
Cut each of the halves you got in the previous image to another half to get total of 4 wedges from one half of a potato.

So now you have a total of 8 wedges from a single potato. It is as easy as that.

Potato Wedges Seasoning

You can use different kinds of seasoning on your potato wedges. However, my go-to seasoning is simple salt+pepper.

If you want to make wedges with good seasoning, try this combination of 1.5 tbsp of paprika+ 1 tbsp of Garlic Powder,+ 1 tbsp of Onion Powder+ 1 tbsp of Pepper+ 1/2 tbsp of Salt+ 1tbsp of oil.

The above seasoning mix gives the wedges the perfect spicy, salty and sweet flavor from the potatoes.

Regardless, the seasoning doesn’t always have to be this complicated. You can also go with some paprika+salt+pepper combo or make your combo.

If it is your first time making potato wedges, go ahead with salt and pepper, so you do not overcomplicate things.

Ingredients

500 grams of Potato Wedges

Seasoning

-1/2 tbsp Salt
-1 tbsp Pepper(I like it spicy but feel free to use 1/2 tbsp)
-1.5 tbsp Paprika
-1 tbsp Onion powder
-1 tbsp Garlic Powder
-1 tbsp of oil

How to make Potato Wedges

Making Potato wedges is easy once you have cut the potatoes(after you clean them with water and dry them, of course), and I usually leave the skin on my potatoes as that makes them extra crispy.

1. Mix the Potato wedges(used russet potatoes) with your seasoning. Spray oil in the air fryer basket and place all your potato wedges.

I used paprika+ garam masala+ salt in this batch of wedges; this is another combination you can try.

2. Set the Air fryer to 400°F or 200°C(russet potatoes), and cook your wedges for 10-12 minutes. Check your wedges after the 6 min mark.

3. Now, shake the wedges and cook for another 5 minutes.

4. You end up with some nice crispy Potato wedges.

I cooked for 14 minutes and that’s why the wedges look slightly overcooked but they were perfectly good. Try cooking for 12 minutes and you are going to be good.

5. Enjoy your wedges with some sweet and spicy sauce or just plain ketchup.

How Long to Cook Potato Wedges In the Air Fryer

This can be a little controversial since not all types of potatoes cook in the exact given time The time needed to cook also depends on the thickness and the type of potatoes you are using.

However, I have tried to find a safe time for cooking, and I would advise you to check halfway through cooking, so you get an idea of how long you need to cook your wedges.

Type of PotatoesAir Fryer temperatureTime to cook the wedges
Russet Potatoes400°F6 min on each side = 12 min
Yellow Potatoes350°F4 min on each side= 8 min
How long does it take to cook Potato Wedges

Now, at the 6 min mark, you can decide if you want your wedges to cook longer depending on your taste, but the 6 min mark is an excellent point to stop and analyze.

It can be, give or take, two more min on each side, depending on the air fryer you are using.

How to Store Potato Wedges?

You can store the Potato wedges in the refrigerator for 3-4 days, and when you want to eat them again, you can reheat them at 400°F for 3 minutes.

Can You Freeze Potato Wedges?

Yes, you can quickly freeze Potato wedges, but you have to be a little strategic about it. First, place each wedge on a tray individually, so they are not sticking to each other, and freeze them.

This will take about an hour, now, take out the frozen potato wedges, put them in aluminum foil, and wrap them together.

You can then put them in a ziplock bag and add the date of making, so you know how long they will last.

This way, the wedges won’t stick with each other when frozen, making it much easier to take them out and reheat them.

Why use an air fryer?

Using an air fryer has its learning curve, but once you figure out the right temperature and timing to cook your wedges or fries, you can just set the timer and forget.

The results are consistent every time, and the fact that you use little to no oil while making these wedges makes them so great.

I do not regret getting the air fryer as it has made the entire cooking process so much easier, and I genuinely like experimenting with different recipes.

Air fryers are the best for potato recipes, and you have to make these wedges to know what I’m talking about.

FAQ’s

WHY ARE MY AIR FRYER POTATOES NOT CRISPY?

There can be several reasons for this to happen, but the two most common reasons are-

  1. The air fryer temperature is not hot enough.
  2. You did not cook the potato wedges long enough inside the air fryer.

DO YOU SOAK POTATOES IN WATER BEFORE AIR FRYING?

You can soak potatoes in cold water, so it draws out all the starch from the potatoes. This makes it extra crispy.
A 30min to an-hour soak does the trick, but I never soak POtato wedges before cooking them in the air fryer as they turn out crispy anyway.

CAN YOU COOK POTATOES WEDGES IN THE AIR FRYER WITH NO OIL?

Yes, you absolutely can! I tried it when I was too lazy and couldn’t find my oil spray. It can get tricky to clean, but if you do not mind that, then go ahead and try this.

I have had no issues cooking wedges and french fries without any oil.
